We offer a wonderful environment for babies and
toddlers in our Nursery and for young children in our
Pre-School.
Our Christchurch centre provides a rare opportunity for children to experience
a good old fashioned childhood with the benefit of modern teaching
theories and practices.
In our daily programme the children start the day
with a gathering mat time to welcome everyone, to introduce new
children and teachers, to discuss what we want to do today and to
sing a couple of songs of Praise and Thanks and cultural songs,
Maori Songs, Nutrition and Movement songs. Our national anthem is
a favourite.
We are guided by the Early Childhood Curriculum
Te Whariki. We therefore have technology areas, socio-dramatic play
areas, science, puzzle, music and creative areas as well as areas
to just make a mess. All of which contribute to the development
of pre-maths, pre - reading and pre - writing skills. There
are also areas to sleep and eat in.
We provide an enormous outdoor environment which
gives children the opportunity to be very active and have wide open
spaces to explore and discover the world around them. The children
can run, climb, crawl, bounce balls, hits balls, dig in our enormous
sand pits, our bike track for riding bikes (the children often bring
their bikes from home the track is so good), a fort to climb, slide
and swing, obstacle courses are made for developing gross motor
skills. Movement is so important because it develops and strengthens
the body and brain as we grow through childhood.
We have a separate area for animals which we affectionately
refer to as the ‘Wild Area’. We have had two Kune kune
piglets Petunia and Devinia who have now grown to their full size.
Devinia has gone back to the farm but Petunia is still with us today.
She is not lonesome, our hen is great company and has taken a fancy
to laying eggs in Petunia's hut. In addition, we have 3 Bunnies
and 2 Guinea Pigs. The opportunities for children to interact with
the animals is an important and vibrant part of our daily programme
and a unique and special experience for children who live in the
city.
Children have an insatiable desire to move and
learn about themselves and their relationship with the environment
and we believe our environment is an outstanding environment to
do just that.
